Can someone explain to me....

I am a firm believer that nobody should live for free, and everyone should be held accountable. That being said... a friend of mine moved recently, she packed up her two kids, her animals, her spouse, half of his family and they all moved to a different state. They are living with his family for right now, her husband who had been in the military, got out two years ago and has been floating from job to job never putting his feet on the the ground and she calls us about once a month begging us to please put money in their account for food. ("Just $40 will get us through"). When they were making this move, I told her him leaving a good sound job to go somewhere to "start over" with no irons in the fire is crazy. She called me today to tell me I was wrong. OK I can totally accept being wrong. Its not the first time, it won't be the last. Then she told me... why I am wrong. She said to me "we applied for welfare, food stamps, housing and medicaid, we are getting everything and we don't have to pay a dime for it all isn't that great" While I do not ever begrudge ANYONE help when they need it, her husband has effectively stopped looking for work because he "put 3 years in the military and deserves a break" Let me tell you.. my mouth was on the floor. Chuck works 3 jobs.. .and he goes to school. I take care of the kids at home, take care of the bills, and make sure the ends justify the means. Even with 3 jobs, we struggle daily. I don't have my nails done, there are bills that have to get slid to the back burner at times, and while my kids aren't starving or crying for what they do not have.. there is plenty they do not receive. For someone to tell me, her husband DESERVES a break has me livid. There is no reason why the state should be supporting them, supplementing I can understand that... but why should our taxes pay for him to sit home and smoke cigarettes among other things? Am I wrong to be upset? Am I out of line? If someone can explain to me why I am wrong, I will retract everything I said. if not. I will stand firm on my beliefs.

Growling done for today...

I'm with you. People who abuse the system frustrate me to no end.

I'm sooo with you. I think there should be some serious changes so that the system isn't producing this mentality. I think everything should change so that there is short term help for those who are really trying and no extra benefits for extra dependants you have on the taxpayers dime

Oy. I'd be so upset - I'd likely have gone off on the woman. There's just no excuse for that, and I hope you tell her as much. Wouldn't we all like it if our husbands could "take a break"? Sheesh.

I am so with you. My husband works two jobs, and I watch other people's kids, and we're still struggling to make ends meet. Before I had kids, I worked for the state. My job was to interview people applying for that type of assistance and determine what they were elibible to receive. While there were a FEW who were looking for temprorary help for the right reasons, the vast majority were freeloaders. It made me sick!!
